The International Journal of Earth Sciences celebrates 110 years of its existence.
The founders of the journal, argued in 1910 that “It has already been perceived by representatives and friends of geology as a disadvantage that in Germany there is no comprehensive journal for the major geological questions.” The first issue of the Geologische Rundschau, as the journal was called at that time until 1992, appeared on April 26th 1910. Several famous geologists acted as editors like Gustav Steinmann, Otto Wilckens, Hans Cloos or Roland Brinkmann. Since then 109 volumes with different numbers of issues were published. During the last 30 years with increasing numbers of contributions and citations, the International Journal of Earth Sciences / Geologische Rundschau has established its place among the multidisciplinary geoscientific periodicals and is a flagship journal within Central Europe. Several landmark papers were published in the Geologische Rundschau, which are valid still today. A collection of these papers were published as “Milestones in Geosciences” in 2003. The Journal presents original and review papers on the history of the earth including such topics as dynamics of the lithosphere, tectonics and volcanology, sedimentology, evolution of life, marine and continental ecosystems, global dynamics of physicochemical cycles, surface processes.
„In my function as president of DGGV, allow me to take this opportunity to give this milestone the appropriate recognition it deserves. IJES/Geologische Rundschau has not just developed into a highly valued geoscience journal in Central Europe, it is also one of the most appreciated products of DGGV. On one hand, this indicates the importance of the work done by the geological society and on the other hand, the commitment, resilience and outstanding quality of the work done by the editor-in-chief and his team. Christian Dullo has been leading this effort for 25 years and is an instrumental part of this success story. I would like to express my and, I am sure, also the appreciation of the geoscience community in general, for his dedication and efforts to bring IJES to where it is now.
