At the Institute of Geology, Mineralogy and Geophysics, the Department of Sediment- and Isotope Geology has its focus in sedimentary geology:

The central theme of our research is the sedimentary archive of planet Earth from the Precambrian to the Recent with focus on the geochemistry, petrology, and diagenesis of carbonates.

Currently the following research topics are covered in Bochum:
The Department works in a wide range of topics including


  • palaeoclimatology,
  • sedimentology and palaeoceanography of continental and marine depositional environments,
  • cave climate archives (speleothems),
  • lake sediments as well as
  • experimental research in the field of diagenesis and geochemistry of carbonates.

An important research field is the development of calibration of new proxies such as the isotopes of magnesium or novel palaeothermometers. Our activities cover the full range of research fields from field projects to purely experimental laboratory work. The DFG Forschergruppe 1644 CHARON is coordinated at Bochum.

Analytical equipment in the field of sedimentary geology:
The Department runs an analytical laboratory for inorganic carbonate geochemistry (carbon, oxygen, strontium, magnesium, calcium isotopes) as well as trace and main elements in carbonates.

Our infrastructure includes

  • state-of-the-art SEM and
  • cathode/fluorescence microscopy.

Regional focus of sedimentary geology research:
We are presently active in Europe, North Africa, South America, India, New Zealand, and the Middle East.
